Oneohtrix Point Never - Describing Bodies
This upcoming LP, Returnal, sees Daniel Lopatin revisit the bliss-out kosmiche trips that last year’s Rifts didn’t have quite enough of. Gone are the synth blurps-and-burps on that release; it’s all about riding the digital wave now, an album perfect for that post-party come down.
Lopatin takes the role of space cadet extraordinaire, his synth washes and appreggios relentlessly scything through (interstellar) space. The drones aren’t meandering and purposeless; they don’t want to lose the listener in the ambient ether but rather, navigate him on to some sublime climax. Which doesn’t happen, of course; this isn’t a post-rock symphony.
After listening to ex-M83 member Nicolas Fromageau’s new effort Team Ghost, which just sees him rehash his Dead Seas… shoegaze-via-synth days, Returnal sits really well with me. Just wish I had something to take along on the trip.
(Oh, and Lopatin actually sings on this one. Very Karin Andersson of The Knife.)
